WhatsApp’s Update Now Allows 8 Users in Video Calls: WhatsApp, which has over 400 million monthly active users in India, In what can be called a welcome move, Popular messaging application WhatsApp is doubling the number of callers that can participate in group video conversations to 8 people from the existing 4 as the communication mode sees a significant uptake across the world during lockdowns. His news was first reported by WABetaInfo, a website that tracks WhatsApp updates. The update is already available to some customers, with a broader rollout expected in 1-2 weeks.

The feature is available first to those who have the latest WhatsApp iOS and Android Beta update installed. One needs to install the 2.20.50.25 iOS beta update from Test Flight and the 2.20.133 beta from Google Play for the feature to work. Other participants will only be able to join the call if they are on the same versions installed.

“With everyone locked in, there is no better time to roll this out, when people are working from home and one wants to talk to people. WhatsApp’s vast majority of users are consumers (individuals), while Zoom is primarily a corporate solution and its issues do have a direct impact on corporates,” said Rahul Matthan, partner at Trilegal, who heads technology practice for firms.
Several Indian companies offering a similar service have also seen a consumption spike in their products. Bengaluru-based startup Airmeet, which does conferences online, has seen time spent on its platform jump from 500 minutes per day in February to 500,000 minutes per day now.
